Chalice Well

"Open wide your eyes For herein magic lies." Formerly known as Ynys Witrin, the Chalice Well is one of the oldest continuously used holy wells in Britain. The water runs red and folk lore tells that this is the free flowing and life giving blood of the Great Mother. For this reason, it has long been a site dedicated to the divine feminine and to the Mother Earth. A later tradition has it that St. Joseph of Arimathea buried the Holy Grail at the nearby Glastonbury Tor so that the red running water became known as the blood of Christ.

Delphi, Greece

Delphi, nestled between mountain peaks, is known as the center of the world, the place where heaven and earth meet. Known for the Delphic Oracle and the pythia, it is here that the priestesses of the oracle issued prophecy. Inscribed on the temple of sun god, Apollo, was the famous dictum, "Gnothi se auton" translated to English as "Know thyself."

Eleusis, Greece

"Magic blossoms throughout the threads of creation." Eighteen miles outside of Athens, Eleusis was the seat of the Eleusinian mysteries dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. Processions of initiates would march from the Parthenon in Athens to Eleusis at the beginning of their initiation. One of the holy sites at Eleusis is the cave called the Plutoneion which was considered to be the entrance to the underworld. This photo pictures some of the ruins near the entrance to the cave.
